Goa Court Demands 24/7 Animal Ambulances

The Bombay high court is compelling the Goa government to implement round-the-clock animal ambulance services and provide essential care for street animals. This action stems from a Public Interest Litigation filed by Indresh Advani, who pointed out the dire lack of immediate medical aid for injured animals, often leaving them in prolonged distress. Many non-governmental organizations lack the necessary veterinary and rescue teams for timely interventions.

The PIL also stresses the need for dedicated infirmaries to shelter aged, infirm, and disabled street animals. Advani's petition highlights the state government's alleged failure to adhere to the Establishment and Regulation of SPCA Rules, 2001, particularly regarding the provision of land and facilities for animal shelters. This inaction exacerbates the suffering of vulnerable animal populations.

Furthermore, the court has directed the government to establish animal incinerators in each taluka, as mandated by the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023. The current practice of shallow graves for deceased animals poses public health risks. This legal push aims to ensure proper animal welfare infrastructure and adherence to established regulations.
