Goa Activists Warn of Legal Action Over Tree Felling
6 Jul
Summary
- Activists urge halt to felling 173 heritage trees.
- Allegations of 22 trees cut without proper assessment.
- Group warns of legal action and high court intervention.

Environmental activists in Panaji have sounded the alarm over the alleged "clandestine butchering" of heritage roadside trees. The Goa Green Brigade has formally requested the Panaji range forest office to cease current tree work and implement a scientific conservation policy.
The group is specifically protesting the Corporation of the City of Panaji's (CCP) proposal to trim or completely fell 173 trees. Activists contend that 22 trees have already been removed without adequate arboricultural evaluation, raising concerns about the competence of both the CCP and the forest department in assessing tree health.
Furthermore, the activists cite violations of National Green Tribunal norms regarding tree base protection and allege that improper pruning practices are rendering the remaining trees unsafe. A resident has stated that legal action, including approaching the high court, will be pursued if the felling is not immediately halted.
