Mangrove Destruction Sparks Legal Fury in Goa
13 Oct
Summary
- Activists demand legal action for widespread mangrove destruction.
- Environmental impact assessment and restoration costs are demanded.
- An action-taken report is required within 30 days.
Environmental activists in Goa are demanding swift legal proceedings against those accused of significantly destroying mangrove ecosystems near the Moira riverbank. The Goa Green Brigade has formally requested the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA), the forest department, and the department of environment and climate change (DECC) to act.
Over four months after the incident, the group has not received an audit of the environmental damage or details on the number of mangroves lost. Consequently, they are demanding punitive action against the culprits, an assessment of the impact on marine life, and the recovery of all restoration expenses from those found responsible.
The activists have also requested a copy of the action-taken report within the next 30 days. They have warned of initiating legal measures to protect the environment and address the alleged dereliction of duty by authorities if no action is forthcoming.
