Glowing Fungi Discovered in Kerala Jungles
29 Jun
Summary
- 215 mushroom species documented in two wildlife sanctuaries.
- Bioluminescent fungi that glow in the dark were found.
- Medicinal and edible mushroom species were identified.

A joint survey by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife department and Mushrooms of India Community has documented 215 mushroom species within Aralam and Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuaries. This extensive fungal inventory highlights the remarkable biodiversity of the Western Ghats region.
The survey identified diverse fungal groups, including striking coral fungi, Boletes, and Polypores. Notably, numerous entomopathogenic fungi, which naturally control insect populations and show potential for biological pest control, were recorded.
Researchers also found mushrooms with medicinal value from the Ganoderma and Trametes genera. Additionally, 25 edible species, such as Termitomyces and Auricularia, were documented for their nutritional benefits.
A major highlight was the discovery of bioluminescent mushrooms from the Phyllobolites group, capable of emitting a soft glow. The survey also cautioned about poisonous species from genera like Clarkeinda and Galerina found in the sanctuaries.
