Illegal Waste Piles Breach River Severn Floodplain
12 Dec
Summary
- Two illegal waste sites in Gloucestershire are under investigation.
- One site near Over is accused of leaking waste into the River Leadon.
- Landowners face enforcement actions for alleged environmental breaches.

Two sites in Gloucestershire are facing intense scrutiny from the Environment Agency over allegations of persistent fly-tipping. The site near Over, reportedly active for seven years, is now accused of leaking waste into the River Leadon floodplain, with concerns it will affect the River Severn. Highnam Parish Council has formally complained about the lack of action over the years.
Meanwhile, the Rudford site is also under investigation. Forest of Dean District Council has issued a Planning Enforcement Action against the landowner for serious environmental breaches, including the unauthorized depositing of construction waste. Local residents describe the situation as "hideous" and detrimental to the local environment.
The Environment Agency stated it is "pulling every lever available" to tackle illegal waste crime in the region, working collaboratively with police and local councils. They encourage the public to report any suspected illegal waste activities through their hotline or Crimestoppers. Last year, the EA successfully halted operations at 743 illegal waste sites.
