The Indian railways is set to launch an innovative rail safari through Gujarat's Gir forest, home to the Asiatic lion. Specially designed Vistadome coaches, featuring colossal glass windows, glass roofs, and rotating seats, will provide passengers with an immersive 360-degree view of the surrounding jungle. This unique tourism initiative will operate on existing metre gauge routes, specifically between Junagadh and Delwada, and Talala and Kansiyanesh, areas frequented by lions.
The project, proposed by the Bhavnagar railway division, aims to blend wildlife tourism with the preservation of the heritage metre gauge network. A feasibility study has confirmed the suitability of these specialized coaches. The proposed train will also include a pantry car and a power van for onboard services. Discussions with the Railway Board have further propelled the plan, focusing on transforming the Gir-connected metre gauge section into a distinctive rail-based wildlife tourism product.
Officials are also redeveloping five stations along these routes, including Sasan Gir, into heritage-themed facilities with modern amenities. This rail safari offers an alternative to traditional jeep safaris and leverages the existing metre gauge infrastructure. Forest department officials have expressed openness to the proposal, recognizing its potential to reduce pressure on jeep safaris and boost regional tourism.
