An Indian flapshell turtle weighing nearly 50 kg was rescued on an early morning in Harsh Vihar, Mandoli, after being found near a contaminated water body. A local family discovered the distressed reptile, carefully contained it, and contacted Wildlife SOS for assistance.
The rescue team from Wildlife SOS transported the turtle to a transit facility in Delhi for evaluation. The species, commonly found in the Indian subcontinent, is listed as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List and is protected under Schedule I of India's Wildlife Act, 1972.
Initial examinations revealed minor abrasions on the turtle's shell and body, likely from surrounding debris and proximity to an asphalt road. Fortunately, no major injuries were sustained. The turtle has since been released into a suitable environment, thanks to the timely intervention.
