Ghaziabad Silt Crisis: Roadsides choked by drain waste
6 Apr
Summary
- Drain-cleaning silt remains on Ghaziabad roadsides for days.
- Waste is dumped on roadsides and green belts, worsening the problem.
- Officials state silt is left to dry before collection, process underway.

Civic functioning in Ghaziabad's Sahibabad, Indirapuram, and Vaishali areas has drawn criticism after drain-cleaning operations resulted in silt accumulating on roadsides for extended periods. Residents highlighted locations near the passport office, the Sahibabad industrial area, and roads in Vaishali Sector 2-A where the waste has remained unaddressed.
The situation has extended to green belts in the Sahibabad industrial area, with residents observing that the extracted waste has been dumped there for a considerable time. Concerns have been raised about the detrimental impact on the city's limited green spaces and the overall waste disposal process.
Adding to the problem, a portion of the debris falls back into the drains due to various factors like rain and animal activity, compromising the effectiveness of the cleaning efforts. In Vaishali Sector 2-A, despite cleaning a week ago, debris persists on footpaths, raising doubts about whether the waste has simply returned to the drains.
GMC officials acknowledged the issue, explaining that silt is typically left on roadsides to dry for a few days before collection. They assured that the process is ongoing and that the concerns raised by residents will be addressed.
