Ghaziabad Mandates Trees for Building Permits
11 Apr
Summary
- Tree plantation now compulsory for all building approvals.
- Developers must deposit security, refunded after verification.
- New rule aims to boost Ghaziabad's declining green cover.

Starting April 1, 2026, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has enacted a significant new regulation requiring mandatory tree plantation for all building plan approvals. This initiative aims to combat the city's decreasing green cover and improve air quality. Developers must now designate specific areas for trees on their maps, with planting quotas varying by plot size and type.
Residential plots require two trees per 100 square metres, while commercial and industrial plots face a stricter ratio of two trees per 80 square metres. Schools and parks must allocate at least 20% of their land for greenery. A crucial component of this rule is a refundable security deposit, set at ₹1 lakh for commercial/industrial plots and ₹2 lakh for schools. This deposit is only returned after GDA officials confirm successful tree plantation, addressing past issues of development projects leading to tree loss.
