Ghaziabad Fights Winter Smog: New Anti-Pollution Drive Launched
14 Oct
Summary
- Ghaziabad administration launched a multi-departmental drive to control air pollution.
- Measures include water sprinkling at construction sites and banning old vehicles.
- Nine pollution hotspots identified for targeted dust mitigation measures.
Ahead of the approaching winter season, the Ghaziabad district administration has rolled out strict directions to multiple government departments to enhance efforts in controlling air pollution. The Ghaziabad Development Authority, Municipal Corporation, UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), transport department, and other agencies have been directed to collaborate on pollution mitigation.
Construction sites must implement adequate water sprinkling and install anti-smog guns to control dust emissions. Residential societies are directed to provide electric heaters to security personnel to prevent bonfires. Mechanized sweeping and water sprinkling will be conducted on roads during nighttime. Hotels and restaurants are required to switch from coal or wood tandoors to PNG or LPG.
Vehicular pollution control measures include action against diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, excluding EVs, CNG, and BS-6 compliant diesel vehicles. The UPPCB has identified nine pollution hotspots, including Sahibabad and Indirapuram, requiring immediate dust mitigation. The district's annual average Air Quality Index (AQI) has shown a declining trend over the past five years.
