Germany's Resources Depleted by Mid-Year: A Wake-Up Call
9 May
Summary
- Germany exhausts annual resources by Sunday, researchers report.
- High consumption driven by fossil fuels, industry, and transport.
- Transition to renewables like solar and wind offers a sustainable path.

By Sunday, Germany will have consumed its entire annual allocation of natural resources, researchers from the Global Footprint Network have determined. This signifies that Germany's Earth Overshoot Day, the point at which humanity's demand exceeds Earth's regenerative capacity, has arrived far too early in the year.
The primary drivers of this unsustainable consumption are Germany's heavy reliance on fossil fuels, significant energy use in industrial sectors, the building industry, road transportation, and intensive livestock farming. These factors contribute to environmental consequences such as droughts and increasing urban heat.
Environmental organizations advocate for a crucial transition away from coal, oil, and gas. They emphasize that embracing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, alongside energy-efficient solutions such as heat pumps and electric vehicles, can foster independence, ensure planning security, and protect the climate.
Globally, Earth Overshoot Day 2026 is projected to occur in late July, mirroring the forecast for 2025. The official global date is set to be announced by the Global Footprint Network on June 5, World Environment Day.
