Record Solar Output Shields Germany from Price Hikes
6 Mar
Summary
- Germany's solar installations exceeded 40 GW for five consecutive days.
- Sunny skies and warm air from North Africa boosted solar energy.
- High solar output is cushioning Germany from soaring global energy prices.

Germany is currently experiencing exceptionally high solar power generation during March, a phenomenon that is helping to stabilize electricity prices amidst rising global energy costs. For five consecutive days, solar installations have supplied over 40 gigawatts of electricity to the public grid at noon, a level of output not seen in previous years for this month.
This surge in solar energy is attributed to unusually clear and sunny skies across eastern and central Europe, sustained by a high-pressure pattern. Warm air flowing from North Africa is also contributing to mild temperatures and optimal conditions for solar power. This domestic renewable energy production is proving vital as Germany, having shut down its nuclear fleet in 2023, becomes more susceptible to global commodity market price volatility.
The impact of this solar output is particularly significant as European gas futures have seen a sharp increase. While high solar generation helps keep midday prices down, the peak evening hours without solar power have become notably expensive due to these rising gas costs. Despite potential impacts from Saharan dust, solar generation is expected to remain strong in Germany through the following week.
