Georgia Alligators Emerge: Warmer Temps Spark Sightings

Across Georgia, particularly in the Augusta area, increased alligator visibility is being observed as temperatures rise and the breeding season nears. This phenomenon is attributed to warmer weather making the reptiles more active and easier to spot, rather than an increase in their population. Alligators, estimated at 250,000 statewide, are more concentrated south of the fall line.

Wildlife officials urge the public to keep a safe distance from alligators and strictly refrain from feeding them, as this can lead to hazardous human-animal interactions. Residents are also advised to supervise children and keep pets leashed near water bodies. Furthermore, nest temperatures play a role in determining the sex of alligator hatchlings, with warmer conditions favoring males.
