Summary
- GEF approves $3.9bn package for climate adaptation and biodiversity.
- Funding aims to support 144 recipient countries over four years.
- New cycle reforms streamline access and accelerate project implementation.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has committed an initial $3.9 billion to support climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and water security across 144 countries. This significant financial package, approved at the GEF Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, will guide the fund's priorities from 2026 to 2030. The funding addresses growing global pressures from climate change impacts like droughts and floods.
Established in 1991, the GEF channels donor funding into environmental projects and supports international agreements such as the Paris Agreement. The new cycle introduces reforms to reduce bureaucracy and speed up project approvals, aiming to get resources to the ground more quickly. This GEF-9 cycle, starting in July 2026, emphasizes integrated programs linking climate change, biodiversity, and water management.
At least 35% of the fund will target least developed countries and small island developing states, with an additional 20% supporting indigenous peoples' initiatives. European governments remain key contributors, recognizing the increasing relevance of environmental challenges across the continent. Uzbekistan, formerly a recipient, announced its intention to become a contributor, signaling a shift in its development model towards ecological transformation.
