Gaur Death Exposes Forest Fencing Failures
27 Oct
Summary
- A female gaur died on NH 69 after a road accident on Sunday morning.
- Improper fencing directed animals toward the highway, increasing risks.
- Emergency veterinary services were critically delayed, locals reported.
A female gaur died on Sunday morning near Kaspadi village in Sagar taluk following a serious road accident on National Highway 69. The incident occurred around 5 PM, with officials suspecting a heavy vehicle collision. An autopsy confirmed the gaur's death, but significant public criticism arose due to the nearly 10-hour delay in emergency medical response.
Investigations revealed critical flaws in wildlife management. Barbed wire fencing installed by the forest department abruptly ended at the highway's edge, unintentionally guiding gaur herds directly into the path of traffic. This poor barrier design proved fatal in an area known for its dense gaur population.
The situation was worsened by a lack of local emergency veterinary services. Despite immediate alerts, neither Shivamogga zoo nor Sakrebailu Elephant Camp had available specialists. A veterinarian had to be summoned from Chitradurga, but by the time of arrival, the gaur had succumbed to its injuries, prompting widespread outcry over the district's emergency response protocols.
