17 Apr
Summary
- A park worker discovered at least eight garter snakes emerging at once.
- The snakes emerged from their hibernaculum as the ground warmed.
- Garter snakes usually grow 18 to 26 inches and have yellow stripes.

A park technician in Ohio was present for an unusual natural event: the simultaneous emergence of at least eight garter snakes from their winter shelter. This rare sighting took place at Liberty Park in Twinsburg, where the snakes emerged from beneath a rock as the ground began to warm.
These reptiles, often called garden snakes, typically gather in a hibernaculum for the winter. Their mass exit in spring signifies the end of hibernation and the onset of warmer weather. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources notes that garter snakes usually measure 18 to 26 inches long and often display yellow stripes, though patterns vary.
These snakes are commonly found in diverse moist environments, such as woodlands, meadows, and marshes. March and April mark their peak breeding season, coinciding with their emergence from hibernation. This particular observation was further enhanced by a ladybug briefly resting on one of the snake's heads.
