Gardeners Urged to Feed Migrating Birds This October
30 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Migrating birds visit UK gardens in September
- Certain foods should be left out to support them
- Some bird species stay in the UK year-round

As the summer comes to an end, the birds frequenting UK gardens are undergoing a seasonal shift. According to bird feeding experts, September marks a change in the types of birds that can be spotted, as non-native species begin their migration south for the winter. In their place, other bird species actually return to the UK to spend the colder months.
However, some birds, such as coal tits and jays, remain in the UK all year round. This changing of the guard means gardeners should adjust the food they leave out to cater to the needs of their visiting feathered friends. Gardeners are now being urged to provide four key foods on their bird tables this October to help support the migrating birds passing through.
While the usual array of blackbirds, crows, magpies, robins, starlings, bluetits, great tits, and finches have been regular visitors throughout the summer, the arrival of autumn will see a shift in the garden's avian population. Gardeners should be prepared to welcome and support these seasonal visitors as they make their way south for the winter.
