Ganga Water Supply Disruption Looms for Ghaziabad and Noida Residents

As of October 5, 2025, the Ganga water supply to areas in Ghaziabad and Noida, Uttar Pradesh, will be suspended until after the Diwali festival. This disruption is due to the annual maintenance of the Upper Ganga Canal, which began on October 2.
According to officials from the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, the water will be released back into the canal from Haridwar on the night of October 20 and is expected to reach Ghaziabad within the next 2-3 days. During this maintenance period, cleaning, repair, and desilting work is carried out on the canal that flows from Haridwar towards Kanpur.
Residents have expressed recurring hardship due to the timing of the shutdown, which coincides with the festive season when water demand is high. Kuldeep Saxena, a resident of Shakti Khand in Indirapuram, noted that the depletion of groundwater levels in the area has led to the need for reboring of pumps, further exacerbating the impact of the Ganga water supply disruption.
To address the shortfall, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation plans to rely on borewell pumps in Vasundhara, Vaishali, and Indirapuram, and will deploy 72 water tankers if required. Meanwhile, the Noida Authority has assured a stable water supply during the maintenance period by utilizing groundwater resources.
