Galicia Wildfires Ravage Spain, Experts Warn of Looming Disaster
29 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Devastating wildfires scorched 330,000 hectares in Galicia last summer
- Lack of investment in forestry management blamed for fire severity
- Experts predict repeat of such fires within 6 years if no action taken

In the summer of 2025, devastating wildfires scorched Spain's northwestern Galicia region, killing 4 people and charring an area twice the size of London. Now, experts are warning that without immediate action on forestry management, a repeat of such catastrophic fires is likely to occur within the next 6 years.
Javier Fernandez Perez, a 72-year-old resident of the hamlet of Parafita, recalls how locals used to burn undergrowth during the winter to create fire breaks and prevent large-scale blazes. However, with hotter and drier weather fueling increasingly destructive wildfires, such traditional methods have become insufficient.
Forestry experts and political leaders have blamed the severity of the 2025 Galicia fires on a lack of investment in prevention and management over the past two decades. Spain's Prime Minister acknowledged that wildfire prevention had been "clearly insufficient" and pledged to take urgent action to ensure such large-scale disasters do not happen again.
Addressing the issue will require a multi-pronged approach, including incentivizing private forest owners to better manage their land, funding the creation of fire breaks and reservoirs, and finding a balance between conservation and fire risk reduction. As the effects of climate change continue to intensify, Spain's experience serves as a trial run for what other European countries can expect in the coming years.
