Fuzhou, Fujian province, has successfully revived its extensive network of inland waterways, transforming them into vital centers for culture and tourism. The city boasts 139 inland waterways totaling more than 295 kilometers, which have undergone comprehensive revitalization efforts including dredging, pollution control, and ecological restoration.
These efforts have resulted in the creation of new public spaces, featuring riverside greenways and parks. Since 2022, Fuzhou Water Cultural Tourism Co. has launched 29 sightseeing routes spanning over 75 kilometers, with 10 routes currently operational, including key attractions like the Jin'an River route and the West Lake-Baima River link.
This initiative has not only enhanced the city's appeal but also boosted its tourism sector. Passenger numbers for inland waterway tours experienced a significant increase of over 50 percent year-on-year during the recent summer season, a period typically quieter due to heat. The city is further developing "boat tour plus" products, integrating cruises with local attractions and cultural experiences.
