Fridge Disposal Crisis: Councils Brace for Backlog
18 Aug
Summary
- Specialist facilities needed for safe fridge recycling due to harmful gases.
- Fires and company liquidation created a significant backlog of fridges.
- Oxfordshire is implementing a booking system due to limited storage capacity.

The UK is facing a growing crisis in the disposal of fridges and freezers, with many local authorities experiencing significant backlogs. These appliances require specialized treatment at approved facilities due to environmentally harmful gases and foams they contain.
Experts attribute the current backlog to a combination of factors, including fires at recycling plants in Darlaston and Thetford, and the liquidation of Unimetals Recycling in November. This has strained the capacity of authorized treatment facilities.
While not all local authorities are affected, some, like Oxfordshire, are feeling the strain due to limited storage. Savannah Coombe, editor of Let's Recycle.com, noted that this situation could unfortunately lead to an increase in fly-tipping.
In response, Oxfordshire County Council has restricted non-residents from using its waste centers and is now implementing a booking system for local residents. This daily limit on disposals reflects the available storage capacity, underscoring a national problem impacting councils nationwide, including neighboring Warwickshire and Gloucestershire.
