A local council has launched an initiative to foster a greener district by distributing free native trees to residents. This project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, focuses on enhancing local wildlife habitats and contributing to the area's net zero targets.
The selected tree species, such as hawthorn, hazel, and wild cherry, are chosen for their significant benefits to wildlife. Councillor George Ayre expressed delight, encouraging broad community participation in collecting a free tree to support environmental goals.
Beyond aesthetic improvements, tree planting offers crucial environmental advantages. The Woodland Trust emphasizes its role in mitigating climate change impacts like flooding and restoring vital habitats for birds, insects, and small animals through interconnected wildlife corridors.
