Free Septic Upgrades Tackle Buxton River Pollution
19 Jan
Summary
- Council offers free septic tank upgrades in Buxton to reduce river pollution.
- Phosphate levels in the River Wye stall housing development.
- Property owners must register interest by February 28 to qualify.

High Peak Borough Council in Derbyshire is launching a government-funded project to provide free septic tank upgrades for properties within Buxton. This initiative aims to significantly reduce pollution in local rivers, particularly the River Wye, where elevated phosphate levels have been impeding essential housing development.
The council plans to supply around 75 state-of-the-art sewage treatment systems to eligible property owners. This effort directly addresses the source of pollution, which originates from human sewage and contributes to harmful phosphate levels. Property owners with existing septic tanks or outdated systems in the designated Buxton project area are encouraged to register their interest.
To qualify for these upgrades, property owners must express their interest by February 28. Councillor Godfrey Claff highlighted that these improvements will not only enhance river water quality but also help unlock stalled planning applications, allowing for progress on new housing while protecting sensitive habitats. Councillor Jean Todd emphasized the scheme's direct impact on household and business drainage systems.
