13 Sep
Summary
- Experts estimate one-third of French wildfires are deliberate arson.
- Arson was the leading cause of forest fires in France in 2025.
- Arrested suspects are predominantly young men, many unemployed.
Arson is identified as the leading cause of forest fires in France, with experts estimating that one-third of all wildfires are deliberately ignited. In the most recent full year for which data is available, deliberate acts accounted for 29.4% of blazes.
This summer, a record 115,000 hectares have been affected by fires, leading to the arrest of 514 individuals, including 198 minors. An early analysis of arrested suspects indicated that 97.5% were men, with an average age of 32.5, and 28.7% under 18. Over 95% were French citizens, and of a sample of 80 suspects, 37 were unemployed.
Motivations for arson vary widely, ranging from personal disputes and revenge to financial gain or ideological convictions. While pyromania accounts for a small percentage of deliberate fires, many individuals act out of a broader sense of defiance or to derive pleasure from destruction. The difficulty in gathering evidence post-fire often leads to unsolved cases.
