France Reopens Bee-Killing Pesticides Amid Outrage

In a move that has ignited fierce opposition, the French parliament has approved a bill allowing the reauthorization of two pesticides previously banned due to their harmful effects on bees. The substances, acetamiprid and flupyradifurone, can now be used by the French food and environmental safety agency, Anses, under exceptional circumstances to aid farm sectors facing crop ruin, such as sugar beet, apple, hazelnut, and cherry producers.

Beekeepers and environmental advocates have strongly condemned the decision. They argue that these pesticides pose a significant risk to bee populations, which are already under pressure from climate change and habitat loss. Henri Clément, a spokesperson for the French beekeeping association UNAF, described the reauthorization as an "absolute disaster" that could lead to "very high mortality rates and reduced harvests." Greenpeace France criticized the government, stating it is "trampling on science, health, the environment and the clear will of the people."

France's environment minister initially resigned over the vote but was persuaded to stay on after discussions with President Emmanuel Macron. Conversely, the largest farmers' union, FNSEA, hailed the bill as a "major milestone and a victory for French farmers," asserting it provides "real and tangible solutions" to growers. Despite the controversy, the agriculture minister stated the agency would only permit pesticide use with strict conditions, including "no impact on human health or the environment" and an "emergency situation."
