Summary
- Nature reserve bought former RAF airfield for £150,000.
- WWII watchtower landmark to be preserved for wildlife.
- Site to undergo ecological surveys and heritage assessments.

Watchtree Nature Reserve has acquired the former RAF Great Orton Airfield, a site featuring a Grade II listed World War II watchtower, for £150,000. This purchase represents a significant opportunity to restore biodiversity and protect a historical landmark.
The charity, which has operated on leased land for 25 years, sees this as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity." The 8.2-acre site already supports species such as swallows, barn owls, buzzards, dingy skipper butterflies, and great crested newts.
Following the completion of the purchase on January 20 using contingency funds, Watchtree Nature Reserve will launch a public consultation. Ecological surveys and heritage assessments will also be undertaken to inform the site's future development.
The reserve aims to raise £50,000 to support its restoration efforts, envisioning a space that connects heritage, nature, and people.
