Forest Encroachments Targeted: Strict Action Promised

Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment Eshwar Khandre has mandated the removal of significant encroachments within protected forests. During a meeting in Belagavi, officials were instructed to clear lands exceeding three acres and those encroached upon after 2015, while ensuring that poor families with smaller land holdings for livelihood are not disturbed.

The minister also emphasized the need to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. This includes preventing the death of wild elephants, as seen in recent incidents, and addressing the dangers posed by illegal electricity connections farmers use to protect their fields. Public meetings will be held in villages bordering forests to raise awareness about wildlife laws.

Furthermore, access to Vajrapoh waterfalls is being restricted due to wildlife disruption caused by tourists. The Forest Department's priority is conservation and increasing green cover, especially by planting local species. Eco-tourism initiatives at Ghataprabha Bird Sanctuary are also being enhanced.
