Folsom Lake Bacteria Levels Spike, Health Alert Issued
3 Jul
Summary
- Elevated E. coli bacteria discovered at multiple Folsom Lake areas.
- State Parks issued a health alert urging caution for visitors.
- Additional testing for E. coli will continue throughout the summer.

Visitors to Folsom Lake State Recreation Area are advised to be cautious following the detection of elevated E. coli bacteria levels. California State Parks issued a health alert after the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board identified high concentrations at several key areas, including Willow Creek Day Use Area, Nimbus Flats, and Black Miners Bar Day Use Beach. These samples were collected from near-shore locations in late June. Officials emphasized that while E. coli is often present in water, elevated levels necessitate vigilance. The state is also monitoring for cyanobacteria and nuisance algae in various water bodies. Recommended precautions for visitors include refraining from drinking lake or river water, avoiding swimming with open wounds, and showering post-water activities. State Parks confirmed that additional E. coli testing will be conducted throughout the summer season.
