Python Hunters Get Tech Boost: New App Predicts Snake Sightings
21 Jul
Summary
- A new app is in development to help locate Burmese pythons in Florida.
- The app uses data from past python removals to forecast ideal hunting times and locations.
- The tool aims to increase catch success rates for invasive python hunters.

Burmese python hunters in Florida may soon rely on their cellphones to track the invasive reptiles. Researchers at the University of Florida are collaborating on a python forecasting app designed to increase successful catches. The app will analyze historical data from python removals to identify the most opportune moments and locations for searching.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to manage the python population. It complements existing methods such as direct hunting, environmental DNA testing, and the annual Florida Python Challenge. The app aims to take some of the guesswork out of hunting by providing data-driven insights.
Previous research by UF has already identified key factors for successful python hunting. Optimal times are between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., particularly during the May to October wet season, with August showing the highest catch numbers. A drop in barometric pressure the preceding day also increases chances, and aquatic vehicles reportedly enhance efficiency.
Pythons have been observed expanding their range northward, with new hotspots identified in western Big Cypress National Preserve, a stormwater treatment area in Palm Beach County, and for the first time outside the Greater Everglades in Charlotte County.
