The WindFloat Atlantic project off Portugal's coast demonstrated that floating wind turbines do not harm the underwater ecosystem. Instead, they positively influenced marine life, leading to greater abundance of fish, octopus, and sole.
These structures improved the seabed, creating a reef effect that attracted mussels, kelp, and barnacles. As a fishing exclusion zone, the wind farm's vicinity became a refuge, further boosting local biodiversity and even increasing dolphin activity.
Remarkably, the wind farm generated 345 GWh of electricity without posing a threat to birds, including northern gannets and gulls, showcasing a successful balance between renewable energy generation and environmental preservation.
