In Dubuque, Iowa, a novel approach to flood control has been implemented on Bee Branch Creek, which was previously buried underground. To combat persistent flooding issues in the 7-square-mile watershed, 14 floating islands were installed in 2017. These islands, totaling 2,674 square feet, are constructed from approximately 67,000 recycled BPA-free plastic bottles and feature native plants and driftwood.
The recycled islands serve multiple ecological functions. They help reduce erosion by interrupting wave energy and slow water flow, allowing sediment to settle and improving water clarity. Plants on the islands absorb excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, potentially mitigating downstream pollution in the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico. Below the surface, plant roots and island structures support beneficial microorganisms and provide shelter for fish and aquatic species.
This innovative project, costing $176,000 and partially funded by grants, highlights the effectiveness of nature-based infrastructure. However, it also underscores the necessity of continuous maintenance. Regular checks are performed on buoyancy, vegetation, and anchoring systems. A 2019 inspection indicated that while most plants were thriving, some required replacement due to animal interference, and fencing needed repairs. Successful implementation relies on careful site selection, native vegetation, durable materials, secure anchoring, and ongoing upkeep.
