Europe's Air: Finland Breathes Easy, Turkey Chokes
25 Mar
Summary
- Finland boasts most cities with safe air quality levels.
- Türkiye cities dominate Europe's most polluted list.
- WHO guidelines for PM2.5 are met by only three European nations.

A recent report highlights a significant divide in European air quality, with Finland emerging as a leader in clean air, while Türkiye contends with the region's most polluted cities. Finland hosts a notable number of cities with PM2.5 concentrations below the World Health Organization's safe limit.
In contrast, eight countries, including Türkiye and Serbia, reported PM2.5 levels far exceeding WHO guidelines. Türkiye's Iğdir and Buca were identified as the top two most polluted cities, grappling with issues like fossil fuel reliance and industrial emissions.
Conversely, Finland's cities benefit from stringent emission controls and a high percentage of renewable energy use. Utö, Muonio, and Kittilä in Finland were among the cleanest, with minimal PM2.5 readings.
For individuals in polluted areas, protective measures include monitoring air quality via apps, staying indoors during spikes, using air purifiers, and wearing KN95 masks when outdoors.
