The Lower Melville Woods Waste Facility in Fife is set to reopen its doors on Monday, months after a significant fire necessitated its closure. The blaze, which began on Tuesday, May 12, raged for two weeks, impacting local communities and leading to advisories for residents regarding air quality.
At its peak, the fire involved flames that stretched across approximately 200m by 300m of landfill waste. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident, and air monitoring data indicated pollution spikes on several occasions. The fire service officially returned control of the site to the council on May 27.
Operator Cireco confirmed that clean-up efforts have progressed, allowing for the reinstatement of public recycling services. The facility will operate during its normal hours, seven days a week. Neighboring Cupar Household Waste Recycling Centre will revert to its usual schedule.
