A public exhibition is set to showcase plans for a green hydrogen production facility at the decommissioned Fawley Power Station. Hynamics, a subsidiary of EDF Energy, proposes to operate the 120MW plant, aiming for production to commence in 2029. The facility would supply hydrogen fuel directly to the nearby ExxonMobil petrochemical complex and refinery via underground piping.
This ambitious project, located on land owned by Fawley Waterside Ltd, is anticipated to contribute between £8m and £10m to the regional economy each year. It is also projected to create 30-40 jobs, primarily for technicians. The green hydrogen produced could substantially decrease ExxonMobil's annual carbon emissions by as much as 100,000 tonnes.
Planning applications are expected in early 2026, with construction potentially starting in 2027. The scheme has already been shortlisted for government financial support, indicating strong backing for this clean energy initiative. Public engagement is ongoing, with an exhibition scheduled at Jubilee Hall, Fawley.
