Summary
- A juvenile osprey was rescued after becoming waterlogged and exhausted.
- A family on a boat threw a flotation device to help the struggling bird.
- Wildlife personnel assisted in swimming the exhausted osprey to safety.

A juvenile osprey narrowly escaped drowning on July 8, 2026, thanks to the swift intervention of a family enjoying a day on the lake. The bird was found floating, severely waterlogged and exhausted, rendering it unable to fly out of the water.
Ospreys possess oily feathers designed to shed water, aiding their quick take-off after catching fish. However, when these feathers become saturated, the bird becomes heavy and struggles. This can occur if an osprey attempts to lift prey that is too large, dragging it into the water.
The family on the boat noticed the osprey's plight and immediately took action. They threw a flotation device to the distressed bird, but it lacked the energy to secure itself. One individual then entered the water to provide support.
With the assistance of wildlife personnel from Audubon North Carolina who were also present, the osprey was carefully guided to shore. This timely rescue prevented a likely fatal outcome for the bird, highlighting the importance of human intervention in such emergencies.
