Falcon Chicks Captivate Thousands as They Prepare to Take Flight

In late September, three peregrine falcon chicks hatched from eggs in a nest atop a 150-meter-high skyscraper in Melbourne. Over the past few weeks, these fluffy chicks have been the focus of intense public fascination, with thousands of viewers tuning in to live falcon cams to witness their preparations for their first flights.

As the big day approaches in early November, the falcon livestream is expected to draw tens of thousands of viewers, as the chicks begin running up and down the ledge and flapping their wings. Experts say the adults will start reducing the chicks' food, almost taunting them to take the plunge. The longer the chicks wait, the stronger and lighter they will be for their maiden flights.

While it's a dangerous environment, the public is captivated by the drama unfolding high above the city streets. The Melbourne falcon cam is just one of many live bird cams across Australia, each with its own dedicated following of nature enthusiasts.
