Extreme Heat Restricts Simple Tasks Worldwide
10 Mar
Summary
- Extreme heat doubles the days restricting routine activities globally.
- Senior citizens face a month yearly where heat limits daily life.
- Over a third of the world's population lives with heat-restricted lives.

Extreme heat is now significantly impacting everyday life, restricting simple daily tasks beyond just survival or physically demanding jobs. New research reveals that the number of days where heat makes ordinary pursuits like walking a dog or sweeping a porch too dangerous has doubled globally over the last 75 years.
Scientists analyzed heat and humidity records from 1950 to 2024, finding that more than a third of the global population resides in areas where daily life is severely affected by heat. For individuals aged 65 and older, this translates to an average of one month per year when heat prevents routine activities. Parts of Asia, Africa, Australia, and North America are becoming increasingly unlivable for seniors.
Younger adults are also experiencing limitations, with climate-driven heat restricting their lives for approximately 50 hours annually. This groundbreaking study is the first to document the consequences of rising temperatures on the fabric of everyday life, not just on health or the ability to perform strenuous work. Even low-exertion walking on the job can become dangerous due to prolonged heat exposure.
