Experts Warn: Feeding Hedgehogs Milk Can Cause Them Harm
18 Oct
Summary
- Hedgehogs need to fatten up before November to survive winter
- Insects dying off in October makes finding food difficult for hedgehogs
- Leaving out the wrong food can do more harm than good for hedgehogs

With the arrival of autumn, hedgehogs are becoming more visible as they scurry around gardens in search of food. However, this time of year poses a significant challenge for these small animals as they prepare for the harsh winter ahead.
According to experts, hedgehogs need to fatten up before November in order to have enough energy to survive the frosty cold weather during hibernation. Unfortunately, a lot of the insects that hedgehogs rely on for sustenance tend to die off in October, making it difficult for these spiky critters to find adequate nourishment.
While leaving out food for hedgehogs is a kind gesture, many people are unaware that they may be doing more harm than good by providing the wrong items. Charlie Mellor, an expert from the Woodland Trust, has specifically warned against giving hedgehogs milk, as it can actually cause them a lot of harm.
As the weather turns colder in the coming weeks, it will be crucial for hedgehogs to have built up sufficient fat reserves to see them through the winter. Failure to do so could jeopardize their chances of surviving the hibernation period.
