Europe Wildfires Rage: 1 Million Acres Burned

This year's wildfires have ravaged Europe, burning more than 1 million acres—triple the historical average, while blazes in the American Pacific Northwest approach modern records. European Forest Fire Information Service data from Thursday shows 1,400 fires, more than double the average, have occurred in the EU this summer. Hot, windy weather combined with drought conditions, exacerbated by carbon pollution, have fueled these devastating fires.

Tragically, three firefighters lost their lives in Greece this week while confronting two distinct fires. Simultaneously, firefighters in France and Spain are working to contain potential flare-ups as a fourth summer heatwave begins. These events have led to the displacement of over 300,000 residents and tourists across France and Spain.

In the United States, fires in the Pacific Northwest, largely ignited by lightning and dry conditions, are rapidly nearing modern records. Oregon wildfires alone have consumed 1.78 million acres this summer, costing $242 million to combat. The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, indicating the elevated threat continues.
