Europe Boils: Rivers Dry, Reactors Strain

Western and central Europe are grappling with a persistent heatwave, characterized by above-average temperatures and suppressed rainfall since June. This weather pattern has led to significantly lower river levels and increased water temperatures, straining ecosystems and energy infrastructure.

France's nuclear power stations, which rely on river water for cooling, are particularly affected. Environmental regulations mandate limits on heat discharged into rivers, potentially necessitating reduced electricity generation. EDF has already temporarily shut down a reactor at Golfech, with further restrictions expected at Nogent. The heat has also boosted electricity demand due to increased air conditioning use.

Simultaneously, the Iberian Peninsula is battling dangerous wildfires, fueled by prolonged heat, dry vegetation, and gusty winds. Spain, in particular, has seen significant fires, including one in Almería province requiring evacuations.

In Asia, Typhoon Bavi has weakened to a severe tropical storm after making landfall in China. Despite its diminished strength, it continues to present a substantial flooding threat as it progresses inland. The storm had previously caused disruption in Taiwan and Japan's Sakishima Islands.

Models indicate continued warmer-than-average conditions across southern Europe in the coming week, maintaining elevated wildfire risks. In China, Bavi's slow movement inland is expected to prolong heavy rainfall, heightening the danger of flash floods, river flooding, and landslides.
