Europe's Heatwave Shatters Records
30 Jun
Summary
- Slovakia and Czechia recorded their highest temperatures ever.
- Over 130 million people endured temperatures above 35C.
- Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average.

Eastern Europe has been particularly impacted by a severe heatwave, with both Slovakia and Czechia registering their highest temperatures ever recorded. Slovakia reached 41 degrees Celsius in Turna nad Bodvou, while Czechia's Doksany saw 41.9C, significantly surpassing its previous record.
This unprecedented heatwave has affected at least 130 million people across Central and Eastern Europe, with temperatures frequently exceeding 35C. Hungary neared its all-time high, experiencing 41.8C. The World Health Organization has noted over 1,300 excess deaths since June 21.
While Western Europe sees temperatures decline, further heatwaves are anticipated across the continent this summer. Scientists emphasize that extreme heat is already pushing societies to their limits, especially given Europe's accelerated warming rate, which is twice the global average.
