Europe Heat Deaths: 200K Lost, Most Preventable
12 Jun
Summary
- Over 200,000 Europeans died from heat-related causes recently.
- Most heat-related fatalities were preventable, WHO stated.
- Extreme heat is now a recurring, life-threatening crisis.

Over the last four years, Europe has experienced more than 200,000 heat-related deaths, a majority of which were preventable, according to the World Health Organization.
Dr. Hans Kluge of the WHO described extreme heat as a clear and present danger, now a recurring crisis that causes suffering and claims lives. He called for countries to implement heat plans to prevent future fatalities.
Meteorologists have also noted the formation of El Nino, which is expected to amplify global warming and extreme weather events. This natural cycle will further heat an already warming planet.
The WHO recommends practical measures to combat heat, such as staying out of the sun during peak hours, seeking cool environments, and staying hydrated. Closing windows during the day and opening them at night can help regulate indoor temperatures.
Further advice includes wearing lightweight clothing, using wet cloths to cool down, and never leaving children or pets in parked cars. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, require particular attention during heatwaves.
