Italy, Spain Battle Floods as Europe Reels From Climate Shocks
21 Aug
Summary
- Flash floods hit Italy and Spain after a severe heatwave.
- Violent storms brought torrential rain and powerful winds.
- Wildfire season is predicted to be the third-worst on record.

Following a scorching 40C heatwave and widespread wildfires, parts of Italy and Spain are now grappling with severe flash floods. Urgent weather warnings have been issued as low pressure from the Atlantic causes temperatures to drop significantly, creating unstable conditions with thunderstorms and torrential rain. Spain has issued yellow and orange alerts across 11 communities, with wind speeds reaching over 62mph in some areas. This follows recent fatal flash floods and landslides that claimed three lives in southern Spain.
In northern Italy, roads transformed into rivers as rainfall exceeded 126mm in Chiavari, prompting flood warnings for the Liguria region. Meanwhile, around 200 holidaymakers were evacuated from a campsite in southern France due to heavy rain and a small landslide. This cycle of extreme weather events, from intense heat and wildfires to sudden floods, underscores Europe's vulnerability to climate change.
