Summary
- EU Commissioner calls for increased investment in wildfire prevention and public education.
- Over 2,200 firefighters battled a massive wildfire in France's Gironde region.
- Climate change is accelerating, necessitating a proactive approach to disaster management.

The European Union requires greater investment in wildfire prevention and public education, according to the bloc's crisis management chief, Hadja Lahbib. She emphasized that climate change is accelerating, demanding a faster evolution of response strategies to proactively prepare for risks rather than merely reacting to disasters.
Currently, more than 2,200 firefighters and 20 aircraft are deployed against a significant wildfire in France's south-western Gironde department. Despite efforts, authorities warn that high temperatures and dry conditions could reignite smoldering areas. This blaze has already forced tens of thousands to evacuate, impacting tourism and the wine industry.
The EU plays a coordinating role in major wildfires, facilitating the deployment of resources from member states and operating the RescEU emergency reserve. Lahbib advocates for increased funding not only for equipment but also for vegetation management and public awareness regarding human activities that trigger fires, as approximately 90 percent are human-caused.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the EU's crisis-response funding, with proposals to significantly increase it. Furthermore, the EU is establishing its own permanent firefighting fleet, with aircraft deliveries expected between 2027 and 2030, underscoring a long-term commitment to enhancing collective capacity against escalating fire risks.
