EU Officials Warn Climate Crisis Threatens Economic Future
29 Sep, 2025
Summary
- EU environment report finds climate breakdown and wildlife loss jeopardize European way of life
- EU struggling to meet 2030 environmental targets, putting prosperity and quality of life at risk
- Calls for continued climate action, warns against weakening green rules

According to a recent report from the European Environment Agency, the European way of life is being jeopardized by environmental degradation. The continent has made important progress in cutting planet-heating pollution, but the death of wildlife and breakdown of the climate are now ruining the ecosystems that underpin the economy.
The report, published every five years since 1995, found that the EU is struggling to meet its 2030 environmental targets in many areas. Leena Ylä-Mononen, the executive director of the agency, warned that this is "putting at risk the future prosperity, competitiveness and quality of life of Europeans."
The findings come amid a rollback of green rules as far-right parties that deny climate science gain ground across Europe. The US has also pressured the EU to weaken pollution standards. However, the EU's top environmental officials argue that staying the course on climate action is essential to safeguarding the economy. They warn that delaying or postponing climate targets would only increase costs, deepen inequalities, and weaken Europe's resilience.
