EU Citizens Demand Urgent Green Energy Shift
5 Nov
Summary
- Three-quarters of EU citizens deem fossil fuel phase-out urgent.
- Nearly 90% desire politicians to prioritize renewable energy.
- Solar power is favored over wind and nuclear energy sources.

A comprehensive survey conducted by the European Investment Bank shows that an overwhelming majority of European Union citizens consider the shift away from fossil fuels to be urgent. The findings indicate that approximately 87% of respondents across the EU's 27 member states desire the prioritization of low-carbon energy sources.
Solar power emerged as the most preferred renewable energy source, with 52% of those surveyed favoring it, followed by wind power at 37%, and nuclear energy at 19%. This sentiment is particularly strong within the EU, where import dependency and geopolitical events have highlighted the vulnerability of fossil fuel prices. The EIB has responded by doubling its energy financing since 2022, reaching €33 billion in 2025.
Despite acknowledging China's lead in clean technology, a majority of EU citizens (55%) expressed a preference for the EU to develop its own green technologies, even if the process is slower. This indicates a strong desire for energy self-reliance alongside the urgent transition to renewables. The EIB's annual financing for energy projects reached €33 billion in 2025, supporting numerous projects.
