Kangaroo on the Loose in Montreal Suburb
17 Jun
Summary
- A red kangaroo escaped captivity and was spotted in Boucherville.
- The animal was illegally kept and lacked necessary permits.
- After a rescue operation, the kangaroo was safely transferred to Granby Zoo.

A red kangaroo, originally from Australia, was successfully captured on June 16th after being sighted in Boucherville, a suburb of Montreal. The Galahad Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals first shared footage of the marsupial, which had reportedly escaped from its captor on June 12th. Quebec's Environment Ministry stated that the kangaroo appeared to have been kept illegally, as permits are required for such animals due to their specific care needs and size.
The capture operation took place after the kangaroo was seen in the same field on June 15th. The Ministry confirmed the animal's safe retrieval and that it is currently under professional observation to assess its health. The kangaroo is now awake, in good condition, and has been safely transported to the Granby Zoo in Quebec.
Authorities had advised the Galahad SPCA against intervening directly, as only the owner could legally recapture the animal. The Ministry is continuing its investigation into the situation, emphasizing that regulations exist to protect both the public and animals requiring specialized care. While the kangaroo posed no significant danger, its presence near residential areas and highways raised concerns for its safety.
