14 Aug
Summary
- 120 students cleaned Avalpoondurai lake on Thursday.
- A cormorant was rescued from a discarded fishing net.
- Initiative promotes wetland conservation and civic duty.

As part of an Independence Day initiative titled 'Freedom from Trash,' 120 students from VET Institute of Arts and Science conducted a significant lake-cleaning drive at Avalpoondurai lake on Thursday. This event, guided by the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), aimed to educate students on wetland conservation, biodiversity, and civic responsibility.
During their efforts, the students made a critical rescue, freeing a cormorant that had become entangled in a discarded fishing net. The bird was safely released back into its natural habitat. The drive underscored the environmental dangers posed by plastic waste and abandoned fishing gear to aquatic wildlife.
Avalpoondurai lake, vital for water storage and groundwater recharge, receives water from the Lower Bhavani Project Canal and Kurangan Odai Canal. EFI's ongoing restoration efforts at the lake emphasize the necessity of sustained community participation and responsible waterbody management for ecological health.
