21 Oct
Summary
- A major fire gutted a large plastic waste facility near Perumbavoor.
- Facility reportedly lacked essential fire safety mechanisms.
- Officials call for a safety audit of waste management facilities.

A major fire recently erupted at a material recovery facility near Perumbavoor, destroying tonnes of plastic waste and raising significant safety concerns. The incident, which occurred at a private company's facility in Arackappady, has led to calls for an immediate safety audit of similar waste management sites across Ernakulam district.
Fire and Rescue Services Department officials noted the facility's apparent lack of crucial fire safety mechanisms. Recommendations included compartmentalizing stored waste to prevent fire spread and installing specialized water curtains. They also stressed the necessity of mandatory no-objection certificates from the department for licensing such facilities.
Ernakulam district has about 15 non-biodegradable waste management companies empanelled by the Suchitwa Mission, alongside several unauthorized operators. Waste collected by Haritha Karma Sena volunteers is processed through these facilities. Industry insiders point out that new entrants often neglect safety norms and proper sorting, sometimes exceeding storage capacities.
Experts advocate for periodic safety audits by local bodies to ensure compliance and prevent future incidents. The incident underscores a broader need for enhanced regulatory oversight in the waste management sector.
