Estonia Tops Global Environment Index, India Ranks Near Bottom

The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2026, a comprehensive assessment of global sustainability, has placed Estonia at the forefront. This biennial index ranks 177 nations based on 47 specific metrics across 12 issue categories. Estonia achieved the highest score, with several European countries dominating the top rankings.

In contrast, India was positioned 176th out of 177 countries evaluated in the EPI 2026. This ranking reflects significant challenges in the nation's environmental performance, with a score below the regional average. India's previous performance in 2022 also saw it at the bottom of the index, a ranking that was disputed by the government.

The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2026, published separately, highlights Denmark as the leading nation, securing the 4th position. This index assesses countries on greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy. The top three positions remain vacant, indicating no country fully met the highest standards.

Furthermore, the Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2026 report identifies India as the ninth most affected country by climate-related extreme weather events over the past 30 years. The CRI measures the economic and human impact of such events, with countries like Dominica and Myanmar ranking higher in vulnerability.
